Open access resources: IOC scientific publications

The Medical and Scientific Commission of the INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE has been producing scientific publications since 1988 regarding the health and safety of athletes engaged in competition in the Summer and Winter Olympic Games as well as on international, national, and local levels for athletes of all ages.  This has resulted in the production of 40 volumes of clinical and scientific information in the forms of practical Handbooks, comprehensive Encyclopedia volumes, and informative Manuals to address the physical conditioning, the prevention of illness and injuries, the immediate treatment of injuries, and the rehabilitation of illness and injuries as related to sports competition.  These publications have been distributed internationally through national Olympic committees and their sports medicine commissions and were also sold on the open market.

The trend in recent years to reduce dependence on printed volumes for a source of scientific information in favor of a reliance on the Internet has led the Commission to the decision to proceed entirely electronically for the distribution of already published volumes and for all new publications.  Further, it was decided to make all Handbooks, Encyclopedia volumes, and Manuals available internationally for study and downloading completely free of charge.

Presently, all of the scientific volumes previously published can be accessed and obtained on line at:   https://www.olympic.org/medical-and-scientific-commission .  The seeker then clicks on IOC MEDICAL AND SCIENTIFIC PUBLICATION SERIES in the menu on the right and is presented with a complete listing of the available publications with the name(s) of the volume Editors.
