Considerations that you should take into account when interpreting a research article

Presented by Professor Barry Braun, PhD, Colorado State University

We all agree that what we believe, and what we tell clients, students and family members/friends about nutrition for exercise and sport should be “evidence-based. But while that is a worthy objective in theory, putting it into practice is fraught with peril.  What evidence to choose? From studies of course, but which studies? What distinguishes a strong study with believable results from one those so flawed that we should run away screaming? Is it really obvious which ones are believable and which are not? And what if there are many studies to choose from but they are not in agreement with each other? And who has the time to read them all carefully and dive into the specific details of each one? The goal of this lecture is to help you recognize the strengths and the weaknesses in published studies and, if you conduct your own studies, help you design them so that they are solid contributions to the body of scientific knowledge used to enhance performance of athletes and the health of the general public.

Presenter profile

Blessing will share his journey with PINES members how he became a sports nutritionist in Zimbabwe. While doing so he will tell us about the organizations and athletes he works with/for. Different organizations ask for different roles and as a result Blessing has different experiences with multiple sport related organizations. An important part of his talk will be to explaining how international sports nutrition guidelines can clash with the Zimbabwean culture. Aside of these challenges, there are other limitations of practicing sports nutrition in Zimbabwe compared to other western societies with more facilities. Blessing will provide multiple examples how he works to overcome these limitations. He is happy to share his story with the PINES members and welcomes all questions and discussion. The session will be moderated by Floris Wardenaar and Heidi Lynch the PINES educational officers.
