Floris Wardenaar

Education Officer

Since September 2017 Floris Wardenaar works at Arizona State University (ASU) as an Assistant Professor for the College of Health Solution. Previously he also worked as sports nutrition consultant at the Sun Devil Athletics Department at ASU. Dr. Wardenaar’s expertise lies in performance nutrition and dietary exposure assessment in competitive athletes. His current research focuses on determining (sport) nutrition needs in the desert heat and validation of practical dietary and hydration assessment methods. At this moment Wardenaar teaches Advanced Sport Nutrition for graduate students and is the faculty advisor of the Sun Devil Sport Nutrition Club for undergraduate students at ASU.

Dr. Floris Wardenaar was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands (1980). He studied nutrition and dietetics (BS) at the Applied University of Amsterdam and received his MS degree in human nutrition at Wageningen University. Starting in 2006 Dr. Wardenaar worked as a lecturer and senior lecturer for the HAN University of Applied Sciences, the Netherlands. Over the years he teached sport nutrition and dietetics and developed a half year full-time course (minor) in sports nutrition. In 2007 Wardenaar was included as sport dietitian of the Olympic nutrition program of the Dutch Olympic Committee, working with track cycling, speed skating, short track skating, rowing and swimming. In the following period he was chair for three years of the Dutch Sport Nutrition Association (VSN). In 2012 he became team leader of the sports and exercise nutrition team at the institute of sports and exercise studies at the HAN University of Applied Sciences. From 2014-2017 he was responsible as team lead for the Olympic nutrition program in the Netherlands. Wardenaar completed his PhD at the department of human nutrition at Wageningen University in February 2017.

Daan Hoogervorst

Treasurer

Daan Hoogervorst is an independent (sports) nutrition scientist and high-performance physiotherapist with a Master’s degree in Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation. He specializes in working with high-performance athletes, particularly in the sports of cycling and kickboxing. Previously, he has served as a nutrition expert and head of nutrition for several professional cycling teams such as the UCI WorldTour team Qhubeka/NextHash and team Ribble-Weldtite Pro Cycling.

Daan Hoogervorst is also well-known for his contributions to various magazines and newspapers, including Women’s Health. Additionally, he has authored guidelines for nutritional advice and dietary treatment for sports and heavy physical activity for the Dutch Sports Dietetics Association (NVD).

At the moment, Daan is providing a lot of 1:1 treatment and coaching and he is responsible for the health and lifestyle program of Musical Master (Dutch musical talents). Furthermore, Daan loves to share knowledge with health professionals by giving webinars and lectures, translating science into practice. Daan is currently the Treasurer of PINES.

Daan Hoogervorst was born on the 15th of May 1995 in a small town near Leiden, The Netherlands. While studying physiotherapy, his interest in nutrition grew and led to completing a minor in sports nutrition at HAN University of Applied Sciences. After completing the minor, Daan joined the team of sports and exercise nutrition at HAN University of Applied Sciences and started collaborating in the field of research under the supervision of Floris Wardenaar. Daan has a special interest in gastrointestinal complaints, dietary and ergogenic supplements (as well as third-party testing), and exercise-related nutrition. Furthermore, Daan has completed his Master of Science in Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation with special attention to the holistic approach to the human body. In his free time, Daan enjoys being in nature, especially at the beach. To stay in shape, Daan can be found on a racing bike regularly.

Catalina Fernández

Membership Officer

Catalina Fernández is a sports dietitian and former national team volleyball player from Costa Rica. She started her early human nutrition BS degree in Costa Rica to then move to the United States to start her specialization in sports nutrition with a master’s degree at The Ohio State University. As one of the recipients of PINES scholarships for the IOC Diploma in Sports Nutrition, she was given the job of developing the Sports Nutrition Department at the Costa Rica Olympic Committee, where she worked hand by hand with athletes, coaches and staff of various sports for 6.5 years, showing how impactful sports nutrition can be for and athlete’s development and performance, and being the first sports dietitian to ever assist the Costa Rica team at the Olympic Games in Rio 2016. After the Olympic setting, she was called by a foreign group of sport directors in charge of developing Sporting Football Club, a rising First Division soccer team in her country, to develop another nutrition department. As the Sports Nutrition Coordinator she was in charge of setting educational programs for all age categories, installing a food service for the players, managing food sponsorships, individual follow ups, traveling with the first team and mentoring junior sports dietitians and advanced students interested on this area.

Catalina is also a level 3 ISAK anthropometrist and has been a lecturer for national and international sports nutrition classes and conferences. Now she is working as an independent consultant for elite athletes and developing her own sports nutrition educational projects.

As an athlete, she played for the Costa Rican volleyball national team for over 10 years, attending two World Championships in Japan 2006 and 2010.

Lachlan Mitchell

Lachlan is a lecturer in Nutrition and Dietetics at Australian Catholic University. He teaches in the Masters of Dietetic Practice and Undergraduate Nutrition Science degree programs. After completing his undergraduate studies in dietetics and exercise science at the University of Sydney, Lachlan worked in a variety of settings including clinical dietetics, and as a performance dietitian and exercise scientist with team and individual sport athletes in Australia, Ireland, and Canada. Lachlan completed his PhD at the University of Sydney where he examined body composition and physiology of natural bodybuilders. He then undertook postdoctoral research work at University College Dublin where his research included both sport nutrition and public health research. He continues to research dietary and exercise strategies to manipulate body composition and improve athlete health and performance. Lachlan provides dietary services to athletes and teams in Sydney.

Nancy Clark

Communications Officer

Sports nutritionist Nancy Clark MS RD CSSD (Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics) counsels both competitive athletes and casual exercisers in her successful private practice in the Boston-area (Newton, MA). She has over 40 years of experience helping thousands of active clients—from “ordinary mortals” to Olympians—win with good nutrition. Nancy completed her undergraduate degree in nutrition from Simmons College in Boston, her dietetic internship at Massachusetts General Hospital, and her Master’s degree in Nutrition with a focus on Exercise Physiology from Boston University.

In addition to helping athletes win with good nutrition, Nancy educates dietitians, trainers, coaches, and other health professionals about how to effectively teach the sports nutrition message.

Her best-selling Nancy Clark’s Sports Nutrition Guidebook has sold over 850,000 copies. Nancy also writes a monthly nutrition column called The Athlete’s Kitchen, which appears regularly in over 100 sports and fitness publications and websites. She has been team nutritionist for the Boston Red Sox Baseball Team. Nancy has been the recipient of several professional awards for her contributions to the profession. Karen Keane

Communications Officer

Dr Karen Keane is a lecturer in public health nutrition and sports science at the Atlantic Technological University, Ireland. Karen is an academic associate on the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr) and a member of the Sport and Exercise Nutrition group at the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute (INDI). Karen completed her PhD at Northumbria University in the United Kingdom in 2017. Her doctoral thesis investigated the Polyphenol Pharmacokinetics and Cardiovascular, Cognitive and Exercise Pharmacodynamics following Montmorency Tart Cherry Intake in Humans, the findings of which are published in several recognized nutrition journals, respectively. Since completing her PhD, Karen’s research interests have expanded to include the correlates of eating behaviors in sport and health and the female athlete. Karen continues to collaborate extensively with colleagues across the globe in academia, elite sport, national governing bodies and industry.

Alongside academia, Karen works as a performance nutritionist creating and developing resources and workshops whilst adopting a food first approach to help promote healthy eating and optimise sport performance amongst athletes. Karen previously worked with Sunderland academy for several years before moving back to Ireland in 2020. At present, most of her applied work is within the GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association), which is Ireland’s largest sporting organization.

Erick Mosquera

Education Officer

Erick is a sports nutritionist graduated from Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), and a first year PhD student. As a member of Cellular and Molecular Physiology of Lifelong Health (CaMP-LH) research group at LJMU, he plays a supporting role in advancing the understanding of lifelong health physiology and metabolism in athletes. Erick’s research endeavours encompass a wide spectrum, ranging from working with endurance-based athletes such as triathletes and ultra-endurance athletes to collaborating in research projects with resistance-based athletes.

One year after being a sports nutrition intern at LJMU’s high-performance unit (HPU), his passion has led him to the role of Lead sports nutritionist where he guides LJMU scholars, TASS athletes, and sports nutrition interns towards their peak potential. As a Lead Sports Nutritionist Erick has created a context-specific sports nutrition delivery system focused on behaviour change models for the LJMU and TASS athletes. Moreover, his passion for education is reflected in the development of an educational curriculum for the sports nutrition senior and junior interns that he guides throughout their learning journey.

Erick’s impact is also felt through his work with professional combat athletes through Vortex Combat Sports Performance, where he applies a blend of scientific rigor and practical wisdom to optimize their performance. Notably, he has also lent his expertise to the Azerbaijani wrestling federation and the Everton Women’s Football Academy, showcasing his versatile skill set in enhancing the nutrition of athletes from various sporting disciplines.

Angela Dufour

Angela Dufour has been working as a high-performance certified (HPC) sport dietitian within the Canadian sport system, including the Sports Institute Atlantic and the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Sport Institute Network (COPSIN), for the past 20 years. Angela has been the lead performance dietitian for the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL), the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), and Team Canada since the 2018 Pyeong Chang Winter Olympics. She attended the 2019 Pan American Games in Peru, the 2021 Tokyo Summer Olympics, and the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, and she leads a national directive on sport supplement policy, provisions, tracking, and education in Canada with Own the Podium. Angela is also a service provider for Major Games Canada, overseeing food and nutrition provisions at all major games. She has worked with many national sports, mainly, the Women’s National Softball Team leading into Tokyo 2020, Canoe Kayak Canada, Badminton Canada, Rowing and Karate Nova Scotia, and many others.

Angela holds a Masters in Adult Education and graduated from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) with a Diploma in Sports Nutrition, 2007. She is a Level 2 anthropometrist. certified by the International Society of Anthropometry Kinetics, and has a thorough understanding of body composition assessment. She is currently pursuing her PhD studies in the Higher Degree by Research program at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia, in  the area of Food Service Provisions for Athletes at Major Games, Focusing on Safe, Sustainable, and Suitable Food. Angela’s previous extensive work experience in the food service/catering industry has led her to take a keen and unique interest in catering for athletes in major events and connect with her supervisor, Fiona Pelly who has considerable research experience in this area of Food Service and Nutrition. Angela’s research is pragmatic in its approach, with the aim of developing, implementing, and evaluating a framework for safe food provision
at major sports and competition events.

Angela is also a part-time faculty instructor at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, NS, where she supervises masters and postgraduate human nutrition students in practical research projects through practicums. She is the owner of her private sports nutrition consulting and education practice: Nutrition in Action, and co-founder of Performance Nutrition Academy Ltd., an online nutrition education service. 

Angela enjoys cooking, media relations, and communications with food commodity groups such as the Almond Board of California, Florida Citrus, and California Prunes, to name a few. Her personal interests are cycling, running, swimming, paddleboarding, and can often be found shooting hoops with her son or in the hockey rink.

Carrie Aprik

Carrie Aprik, MS, RD, CSSD is the winter sport dietitian for the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) and ISAK level 2 anthropometrist. In this role, Carrie leads the Olympic nutrition strategy for Team USA winter sport, and provides in-depth nutrition services and on-the-ground support to athletes nationally and internationally. She is also a founding member of the US Figure Skating Body Empowerment and Environment Project (BEEP). Prior to this role, Carrie served as a contract dietitian for US Figure Skating and the US Women’s National Hockey team, supporting them at the 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympic Games. Concurrently, Carrie spent 5 years the sport dietitian for the Detroit Pistons and a decade in collegiate sports.

Apurva Surve

Executive Officer

Apurva is a consulting sports nutritionist from India. She graduated from ShreematiNathibai Damodar Thakersay Women’s University in India with a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Food Science and Nutrition. She is also a former national-level athlete and an International Judge in the ancient Indian sport of Mallakhamb. Because of her passion for sports & aptitude for science, she decided to pursue a career in sports nutrition.

 

Apurva began advising athletes on nutrition in her spare time after completing a Master’s degree in nutrition and working full-time. There were and still are many misconceptions about sports nutrition in India. Athletes, coaches, and parents are now confronted with two major issues: a lack of awareness of, and access to, appropriate nutrition information. With this in mind, she approached a number of coaches and sports organizations and led a number of nutrition workshops for coaches, athletes, and parents. She has over a decade of experience assisting fitness enthusiasts and athletes in achieving nutrition and performance goals. She has done product testing, recipe development, content writing, and health and nutrition workshops, in addition to counselling athletes from sports such as Mallakhamb, Cricket, Swimming, Long Distance Running, Gymnastics, Kabaddi, Badminton, Tennis, Football, Karate, and Boxing.

Apurva has worked as a nutrition advisor in various Indian sports academies, fitness centers, and corporate offices, and has spoken at various national and international conferences held in India. She was appointed Assistant Professor at a Mumbai undergraduate nutrition and dietetics programme. She is currently a visiting lecturer for nutrition and sports nutrition topics at various Mumbai universities and academies.
