Active member research

Research is important for informing evidence based practice and is also an area that many PINES members are interested in or working within.

Member research survey

Investigating members: Education Officers Heidi Lynch and Floris Wardenaar

The purpose of this survey is to; 1) find out which PINES members are currently conducting sport nutrition research – and are involving students in the research process, and 2) find out which PINES members are involved with professional or academic sport nutrition courses. The survey data will help inform future communications and projects the Education Officers are working on to help PINES members.

Athlete food choices

Investigating members: Rachael Thurecht (PhD candidate) and Fiona Pelly (PhD supervisor)

The researchers are recruiting high performance athletes to complete an online questionnaire. The research is testing the consistency of the Athlete Food Choice Questionnaire (AFCQ) when administered to athletes outside of a major competition event and investigate any changes in factors during different competitive phases.

Rachael would greatly appreciate it if you could share the research with athletes to ensure input from all sports and countries.  If you are a coach, team manager or support staff of high-performance athletes, please share and encourage their participation.

Within the study, participants are asked to complete the AFCQ and some questions on eating behaviours and demographics.  The questionnaire should take 15-20 minutes to complete.  This research has ethics approval from the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Who can participate?

You can complete the online questionnaire if you –

  • Are aged 18 years or old
  • Are a high-performance athlete or para-athlete
  • Have competed in national, international or other major competitive events in your sport
  • Have a basic ability to read and write in English
  • Are from any sport or any country

Tart cherry supplementation

Investigating member: Vlad Sabou (PhD candidate)

We are inviting sports nutrition practitioners and strength and conditioning coaches to take part in our latest study investigating current tart cherry supplementation practices and attitudes. Individuals can take part in the study without having previously used tart cherry supplements as they will be able to express their opinion on the current body of literature, the potential benefits of tart cherry supplements and future directions for research and supplement development in this area.
